Military scientist Bruce Banner was about to test his newest invention, a gamma bomb, when teenager Rick Jones wandered onto the testing range, unaware of the danger. Banner saved Jones but absorbed the brunt of the blast which permanently irradiated his entire cell structure with gamma radiation. Now, whenever Banner becomes angry he transforms into the Hulk, a gigantic green monster with superhuman strength and endurance, who possesses a healing factor which can seemingly repair any wound at a greatly increased speed. While transformed into the Hulk, Banner is susceptible to uncontrollable rage and his regular genius-level intellect is replaced by a child-like intellect. His strength and endurance increase exponentially the madder he gets, and while fully enraged he has been known to be so tough that steel crumples against even his eyes.
Over the years, Banner has had various degrees of control over his transformations. Originally, this was triggered by nightfall, and he became grey instead of green. Later in his career, Banner became trapped in the Hulk’s body full-time, but he retained his human intelligence. He spent some of this time as the grey Hulk once again and he moved to Las Vegas, changed his name to Mr. Fixit and became an enforcer for the Mafia. He later turned green again and went through a period in which, whenever his anger became uncontrollable, he would transform back into Banner, but with the savage Hulk’s rage and child-like intellect. For a time, Banner and the Hulk were divided into two separate bodies after battling Onslaught and Banner was trapped on Counter-Earth. During this time, the Hulk began to emit lethal levels of gamma radiation and Apocalypse attempted to recruit the Hulk as War, one of his Horsemen. This was unsuccessful, and Hulk’s radioactivity faded upon his reunion with Banner. Banner is no longer officially considered to be a founding member of the Avengers, having been retroactively replaced by Captain America. Banner has brown hair, but as the Hulk his skin, hair and eyes are all different shades of green.
Banner is a former founding member of the Avengers and the Defenders. He is also She-Hulk’s cousin.
