Origin

Madelyne Pryor began her existence as a clone of Jean Grey, created by the demented mutant geneticist Mister Sinister in the hopes that she would produce a child with Grey's lover Scott Summers (the X-Man known as Cyclops). While the clone was still maturing to adulthood, Grey was secretly replaced by The Phoenix Force, and placed in suspended animation. The Phoenix Force sacrificed its life not long afterwards, and in its death throes, a fragment of its consciousness entered the clone, giving it life and sentience. Unaware of any outside influence, Sinister revived his clone and naming her Madelyne Pryor, maneuvered her into Summers' life.

Summers and Pryor met in Anchorage, Alaska. Summers was struck by the woman's inexplicable resemblance to his lost love (as he remained under the impression that it was Grey who had died). The two soon discovered that Pryor had narrowly survived a plane crash on the night Grey apparently died (a false memory planted by Sinister). Though Pryor captured Summers heart, she remained a mystery of sorts- for instance, she was immune to the telepathy of Summers' mentor Professor X, an exceedingly rare trait for a normal human to possess.

Nevertheless, Summers and Pryor soon became engaged. Their relationship became the target of Mastermind, who tried to ruin their happiness as revenge for defeats suffered at the hands of the X-Men, but his interference ultimately brought the two closer together. They were married, and Summers left the X-Men for the life of a quiet civilian. They soon had a son, whom they named Nathan Christopher Charles Summers. Their happiness would not last.

Jean Grey was discovered by the Avengers, alive and in suspended animation in an underwater pod. Summers immediately left his wife and son to investigate. While he was away, Sinister's Marauders attacked, abducting Nathan and leaving Pryor in the hospital. She contacted the X-Men, who arrived just in time to stop the Marauders, who had returned to finish her off. Pryor remained with the X-Men, while her husband joined Grey in forming a new team, X-Factor.

Pryor was soon approached by the demons S'ym and N'astirh, with whom she bargained for the power to find and rescue her missing son. N'astirh unlocked Pryor's latent psychic powers and further enhanced them with his demonic magic; Pryor revelled in her newfound abilities, taking the name The Goblin Queen.

N'astirh brought Pror to an orphanage in Nebraska, which was actually a front for Sinister's main laboratory. Sinister revealed to Pryor his hand in her creation, including the fact that she only existed as a means to deliver to him her child; however, Sinister hadn't anticipated Pryor's magically enhanced powers, and so she was able to escape with her son.

N'astirh had since used Illyana Rasputin to open a temporary portal to his home plane; Learning she was a clone and the constant pressure N'astirh's influence put on her soul finally unhinged Pryor's mind, and she eagerly agreed to sacrifice Nathan's life to open the rift permanently.

Hiding her powers, Pryor convinced the X-Men that it had been Scott who had kidnapped their son, even seducing Scott's brother Alex (the X-Man Havok). The X-Men attacked X-Factor, though the two teams soon realized they were being manipulated; The heroes combined forces in time to defeat N'astirh, save Nathan and close the portal.

Now suicidal, Pryor trapped herself and Grey inside a bubble of pure telekinetic force. She then linked her life force to Grey's and forced herself to die, planning to take her hated rival with her. Though unable to match Pryor's power, Grey's will was indomitable, and she was able to survive by absorbing the Phoenix Force fragment in Pryor into herself, taking with it all of Pryor's memories and experiences.

Pryor's spirit continued to exist after a fashion, as a powerless shade on the Astral Plane. In this form, she was reunited with Scott and Nathan (now known as Cable) years later, and the three made their peace.

Note: Madelyne Pryor seemingly spend several months at the side of X-Man, but this was in fact a psychic manifestation he had created with his own indescribable power.

Powers

As a clone of Jean Grey, Madelyne Pryor has all of Grey's telepathic and telekinetic mutant powers, albeit with none of her training. Due to N'astirh's influence these powers were exponentially increased; Pryor was able to use her telepathy to bring out the darkest part of a person's phyche. Coupled with her enhanced telekinesis, which she could use to alter reality in her immediate vicinity, she was able to transform her victims into evil pseudo-demons.

Trivia

  • Madelyne Pryor was likely named after the English folk singer Maddy Prior, of whom Claremont is a fan.
