Real Name: Anthony “Tony” Stark
While touring Vietnam[*] during the war, former weapons designer Tony Stark was hit by shrapnel and imprisoned by the warlord Wong-Chu. Ordered to construct weapon or be allowed to die, Stark instead created a suit of high-tech armor which kept his heart from stopping. Returning to America, Stark used his revolutionary transistor inventions to become a multi-billionaire. Stark’s heart was repaired, then damaged and repaired again, and for many years he did not need his chest plate to survive. After one of his armors gained sentience due to a freak reaction to the Y2K virus, it turned against him. The intelligent armor nearly killed Stark, but when he suffered a massive heart attack, the armor repaired Stark’s heart with its own artificial power source, causing its own destruction in the process. Stark subsequently scaled down the artificial intelligence inside his newer armors, but has recently undergone the Extremis procedure, the long-term effects of which are understandably unclear.
Stark has designed and worn a number of suits of armor containing advanced weaponry and communication equipment, force beam “repulsor ray” projectors in the palms of his gauntlets, multi-beam projectors in the chest plates, and booster jets in the boots which allow him to fly. He can also seal his armor to be airtight. Some of Stark’s former armors possessed the ability to absorb energy directed towards them for use as an alternate energy source.
The majority of Stark’s armors have been red and gold, but his first two were grey then completely gold, and he later wore a red and silver model and a navy blue stealth model. His secret identity was once publicly known, but Stark and Iron Man are now once again commonly thought to be different people. Stark is a recovering alcoholic. He is based primarily in New York City and Seattle, Washington. Stark has black hair, a goatee and blue eyes.
Stark is a current and founding member of the Avengers and a former member of the West Coast Avengers. He is the owner of Stark Enterprises, Stark Solutions and the Wakanda Design Group, the chairman of the Maria Stark Foundation, the Black Panther’s employer, and the former employer of Ant-Man (Scott Lang).
