Backstory

Chris Claremont began his career writing comics by landing a spot on the Marvel book "Iron Fist", where he met and collaborated with penciller John Byrne for the first time. Claremont and Byrne were soon handed the failing "X-Men" title, and together they transformed a book on the verge of cancellation to Marvel's biggest sales juggernaut. Over the course of his legendary sixteen year run on the title (which begame "Uncanny X-Men" midway through), Claremont broke with tadition by introducing social issues such as racism and by pushing a strong female cast. Though his work is often criticized as being overly "wordy", Claremont is nevertheless considered to be one of the greatest writers of all time.

After parting ways with Marvel in 1991 over an editorial dispute, Claremont did some work for rival companies DC and Dark Horse. He also wrote a number of novels, including the three-issue "Chronicles of the Shadow War" Star Wars series, co-writen with George Lucas. He later returned to Marvel and the franchise he made famous, with multiple runs on "Uncanny X-Men" and "X-Treme X-Men" spanning 2001 to present.
